A runnable monthly base meeting

~7 min

Reading

Here is a 90-minute monthly base meeting design you can use next month. Adapt it to your campaign. The point is to run from a design, not improvise.

0:00 — 0:10. Welcome and check-ins. Everyone in the room (or breakouts of 5-7 in larger meetings) answers one short question. Not 'how are you'. Something like 'name one thing that surprised you this week'. Builds the relational layer before content.

0:10 — 0:25. Story spotlight. One member tells a 5-minute story tied to the campaign — a tenant talks about an eviction notice, a parent talks about a school board meeting. Followed by 10 minutes of structured response from the room.

0:25 — 0:55. Campaign work. The actual content: report on the last 30 days, a decision the group needs to make, a vote on a specific tactic. Decisions get made here, not in a Slack channel afterward.

0:55 — 1:15. Skill-up. A 20-minute teach-in by a member or guest — how to write a letter to the editor, how to use Action Network, how to read a council agenda. Rotating teacher each month.

1:15 — 1:25. Commitments and asks. Each person in the room names one thing they will do before the next meeting. Specific. Public. Written down.

1:25 — 1:30. Close. One word from each person on the way out. Closes the relational frame the meeting opened with.

Learner action

Take this agenda. Adapt three time blocks to your campaign. Send it as the agenda for your next base meeting — at least 5 days in advance.

Action: Complete the learner action above, then slide to continue.
