Capturing commitments

Reading

A commitment captured on camera and written down within 24 hours is a commitment that travels. Everything else evaporates.

The official is in the room. The press is in the room. Constituents are in the room. The commitments made tonight are only valuable if they survive the trip from the venue to the public record.

Three things must happen in real time.

1. The ask is explicit. Facilitator (Beat 7 of the run of show) says the words. 'Senator, will you publicly commit to opposing the redrawn map in the next session vote?' Yes/no. Not 'how do you feel about.'

2. The answer is captured. Camera locked on the official. Audio recorded. A staffer or volunteer transcribes the answer in real time on a phone or laptop. Cross-check the transcript against the video within 24 hours.

3. The answer is documented in the live commitment sheet. A simple spreadsheet — official name, question asked, exact words of the answer, timestamp in the video. The lead organizer reviews this sheet within 12 hours of the event.

Three follow-through actions, within 48 hours.

1. Public capture. Post the video clip of the commitment, with the exact words quoted, to your organization's channels within 48 hours.

2. Written confirmation to the official. Send the official a letter (cc the press) thanking them for the commitment, restating it in their own words, and naming the next milestone.

3. Scorecard update. Add a new row to the scorecard with the commitment, the source URL of the video clip, and the date.

Commitments that miss any of these three steps regress to deniability within two weeks. Officials are not malicious about this — they are busy, and a vague memory is easy to reframe. The three-step capture is the structure that prevents drift.

Learner action

Set up the commitment-capture sheet before the event. Assign one volunteer specifically to operate it. Confirm they have a charged device.
