Course roadmap
Welcome to Cleaning Roster Data for Union Campaign Success.
This course is built for the new data person on a union campaign — the staffer or volunteer who just inherited the spreadsheet of union workers and was told to “clean it up.” You do not need any prior experience. You need three things:
- A Google account.
- A willingness to read tables carefully.
- A real roster you care about, even if you do not have it yet.
Across six 30-minute modules, you will move from a spreadsheet that looks like this on day one:
Five different people built it across two years. Some phone numbers are (000) -. Names have leading spaces. Addresses are jammed into one cell. Hidden line breaks make matching fail.
To a one-page Campaign Roster Health Report on day three with five indicators and a paragraph the lead organizer can read aloud at the next meeting.
Your role in this course
You are the new data person on a union campaign. The lead organizer just handed you a spreadsheet of union workers and asked one question:
How many workers do we actually have, and what percent signed cards?
The honest answer is: I cannot tell you yet, because the spreadsheet is too dirty. By the end of this course, you will be able to answer that question and four more.
Confidence pulse
Before you begin, choose the statement that best describes you.
What to expect at your level
Level 1: Focus on the plain-language explanations and checkpoints. Level 2: Pay attention to the formula-anatomy reads. Level 3: Use the final report as a portfolio piece. Level 4: Treat the course as a way to teach your own team.
Action: Mark this page complete when you have finished the activity above.
